This is a non-exempt seasonal position that reports to the Transit Director and is responsible for driving buses and /or vans to provide reliable and safe transportation for the public during contracted hours.  This position includes interacting with the public, customers and coworkers, operating of the wheelchair lift, pushing, pulling and bending to secure wheelchairs using the equipment provided.


Essential duties

Completes and documents bus pre-trip inspections including visual and operational check of assigned vehicle.

Reports any mechanical or other equipment problems requiring attention including, but not limited to:  the bus, the two-way radio, the tablet, equipment inside the transit building.

Drives a passenger bus on a scheduled route, collects fares and passes.

Uses tablet and/or documenting rider information & other general documentation as required.

Communicates with passengers regarding bus schedules, rides, rules of conduct and general information.

Communicates with other employees regarding schedules, passengers, equipment and other information pertinent to the efficient operation of transit.

Ensures passengers safety including, but not limited to:  CPR & First Aid as needed, proper use of tie downs, seat belts and other safety equipment.

Answers cell phone as needed when the office is closed.

Performs related work as required.


Additional duties

Delivers fares to dispatcher in the transit office.

Maintains cleanliness of vehicle on a daily basis.

Complies with and participates in Vermillion Public Transit's alcohol and drug prevention program.

Attends in-services as required.


Job Location and Equipment Operated

Drives bus with automatic transmission for assigned schedule and operates two-way radio, wheelchair lift, tie down equipment, tablet, cell phone, telephone, power washer, compressor, computer, copy machine, power and hand tools. 

Requires sitting and driving bus for shifts up to 8 hours; pushing and pulling 600 lbs.; frequent bending, kneeling and reaching; and physically assisting passengers on and off bus, to and from buildings, as needed.  May work in hot, cold, extreme weather and noisy conditions.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Be knowledgeable about all local & state traffic rules and regulations.

Be knowledgeable of the operation and maintenance requirements of passenger buses or similar automotive equipment

Ability to use sound judgment in situations requiring immediate decisions.

Ability to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.


Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.


Necessary Special Qualifications

Must possess or be able to obtain within 30 days of employment, a valid South Dakota Class C Commercial Driver's License with Passenger Endorsement.

Maintain certifications in:  Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Defensive Driving and Passenger Service and Safety (PASS).
